The human slave, who cannot drive, who cannot travel without male permission, who cannot even shop for groceries without a male guardian. Women who have no male relative have extremely difficult circumstances. Any male, even a small 4 year old, has greater authority over an adult female than any female has. Even custody of children automatically go to the father or the father’s family. The women are basically like a shadow in the house.
British origin Dr. Qanta Ahmed is speaking at the event, “Profiles in Courage: Human Rights Defenders in the Struggle to End Violence Against Women,” parallel event in connection with the 2013 annual session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, March 4, 2013.
Dr. Qanta Ahmed in a human rights activist, associate professor of Medicine at the State University of New York (Stony Brook), author of In the Land of Invisible Women: A Female Doctor’s Journey in the Saudi Kingdom.
Dr. Ahmed talks about a case of a woman in Saudi Arabia who had been found to be mentally retarded, a case she was asked not to publish. This woman was kept as a ‘breeding machine’ – basically a human slave. The husband kept a second wife while she had been kept at her parents house and only used for impregnation. After being impregnated she was then relocated to her parents home to give birth to the children. The children were then taken from the mother, and had no idea who their own mother was. When this case was being investigated the woman had already given birth to 6 children. She had no permission to connect or meet with her own children.
